About us

The Finnish Herpetological Society was founded in the early 1990’s by a group of herpetoculturists who wanted to share experiences among themselves and others interested in herpetology. The aim of the society is to promote the study and husbandry of reptiles and amphibians, and their conservation in their natural habitat.

For members, the society arranges meetings, expert lectures and excursions and provides an open library as well as opportunities to meet with other herp enthusiasts.

The chair person of the society is Niko Selin.

Herpetomania magazine

The most visible part of the society’s functions is the quarterly publication Herpetomania, the only extensive publication in Finland specializing in herpetology, reptiles and amphibians and their husbandry. The magazine has been published since 1992.

Herpetomania aims at improving the conditions of terrarium animals by giving the readers reliable information on keeping and breeding reptiles and amphibians. It also tries to decrease the market of wild-caught and endangered species, and to integrate nature conservation and animal protection with scientific herpetology.

The editor of Herpetomania is Jukka Palm.
