Herpitiles of Finland

Finland is located in the north most part of Europe. Because of rough winter, all our herptiles hibernate at winter and are also many other ways adapted to the northern climate. Regardless of cold climate, ten species of herptiles are found in Finland. These are:

Amphibians

  • Warty Newt (Triturus cristatus)
  • Smooth Newt (Triturus vulgaris)
  • Common Toad (Bufo bufo)
  • Common Frog (Rana temporaria)
  • Moor Frog (Rana arvalis)
Reptiles
  • Viviparous lizard (Lacerta vivipara)
  • Slow Worm (Anguis fragilis)
  • Smooth snake (Coronella austriaca)
  • Grass Snake (Natrix natrix)
  • Adder or Common Viper (Vipera berus)
