The Herpetological Society of Finland - Suomen herpetologinen yhdistys
The society was founded in 1992. It is dedicated to promote the research,
protection, keeping and breeding of reptiles and amphibians.
The official meetings of the society take place in Helsinki, but there are
smaller meetings in other towns too. There are also arranged
herpetological journeys time to time. In the spring we usually make a
small trip to some Finnish terrarium house. There have also been three
trips abroad to observe wild reptiles and amphibians, two to Turkey and
one to Tunisia. During the summer 1999, a project was made to survey the distribution of
the rarest reptile in Finland. That reptile is the smooth snake (Corenella
austriaca). There are only five reptile species and five amphibian species in Finland.
